What the other side of the story can look like: Part 1

"So he came out of the bathroom and I sort of grabbed him and I said to him, “Can you say something to me?” and he went rrrrr and I said OK, this is not right. "

In this episode of 404: Brain Not Found, Jane recounts the harrowing experience of recognizing her partner Pier's stroke symptoms in the middle of the night. Initially dismissing his symptoms as mere drunkenness, Jane's realization of the severity of the situation dawned when Piers struggled to communicate and lost control of his motor functions.

Amidst the confusion and initial dismissiveness of peculiar behaviors, she recalls a pivotal moment when Piers’ inability to articulate words and a peculiar facial droop signaled a grave medical emergency. Jane's astute observations, though initially clouded by disbelief and rationalization, ultimately triggered the crucial decision to seek immediate medical attention.

Jane faced challenges of navigating medical bureaucracy and communication barriers amidst the chaos of emergency care. As Piers was whisked away to the hospital, Jane found herself grappling with fragmented information and bureaucratic hurdles. From fumbling with Medicare details to facing the frustration of missed calls from hospital staff, Jane's experience epitomizes the disorienting whirlwind of emotions and logistical hurdles faced by caregivers in moments of crisis. Yet, amidst the chaos, Jane's resilience and resourcefulness shone through, as she mobilized support networks and advocated tirelessly for Piers’ care.

Being a supporter of a stroke survivor can be more easily said than done, and for Jane, her journey towards understanding and supporting his recovery unfolded gradually. From the anxious wait for updates to navigating the complexities of stroke rehabilitation, Jane's experience epitomizes the resilience and unwavering commitment of caregivers. As she navigates the uncertain terrain of recovery, Jane's story serves as a reminder of the impact of love, resilience, and unwavering support in the journey towards healing.

Episode 9 features Jane McGarry and speech pathologist Dr Andy Kilov.
